Live with Benevolence: A Renovation Project by Fu Chu Hsu

Revitalizing an Old House into a Tranquil Residential Space

How would you manage your rest life when you were going to retire? The project is a renovation of an old house. The designer gave new life to the space by re-arranging the layout and function.

Fu Chu Hsu, a renowned designer, has transformed an old house into a tranquil residential space in Taichung, Taiwan. The project, named "Live with Benevolence," breathes new life into the space by re-arranging the layout and function, creating a harmonious environment for retirees to enjoy their golden years.

One of the unique challenges of this project was its location on the rooftop, which made it susceptible to extreme heat and humidity during the summer months. To combat this, Hsu implemented innovative design solutions. A new layer of thermal insulation material was installed on the roof to block the heat from the sun, while flower stands were strategically placed in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows to prevent direct sunlight. The living room features LOW-E glass, which effectively reduces the temperature of the sunlight and protects against UV damage. Additionally, cellular shades with excellent thermal insulation properties were installed to further reduce heat in the space.

The interior design of "Live with Benevolence" focuses on creating a bright and unified space. The original dark color palette was replaced with vibrant and warm colors, with the wood color of the furniture serving as the core element. The wood tiles used throughout the space not only add visual appeal but also provide practicality and durability. The overall interior color tone is carefully curated to create a sense of harmony and tranquility.

One of the standout features of this project is the integration of an organic vegetable garden on the rooftop. This not only adds a new dimension to the space but also helps to regulate the temperature and enriches the residents' lives with the joy of gardening. The crops grown in the garden can be shared not only with the owner but also with friends, promoting the concept of urban farming and fostering community engagement.

The renovation of "Live with Benevolence" presented several challenges, including an old wall with architectural concrete that had deteriorated over time. However, the design team decided to preserve it as it held sentimental value for the client. The wall was carefully polished to remove mildew and stains, and a new coating was applied to restore its original texture, seamlessly blending the old with the new.

The "Live with Benevolence" project was completed in August 2020 and has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With "Live with Benevolence," Fu Chu Hsu has successfully transformed an old house into a haven of tranquility and functionality. This project showcases the designer's ability to create unique and innovative spaces that enhance the lives of its inhabitants, making retirement a truly blissful experience.
